Hi, I'm Tanya!

I feel like I haven’t updated my blog in forever when in reality it’s only been about a week. I am now realizing how much I love blogging and sharing my different life experiences. This past week has been hectic for me, I’ve had the privilege of helping my little sister move to her new school and getting her all settled in. I also attended seminars dedicated to informing family members about the dynamics of College and what they expect from family and friends. The first day we arrived on campus you could immediately feel a strong, positive energy and that made me feel like my sister made the right decision.

Although this post is about me celebrating my sister’s achievement, I hope it will serve as motivation for you. Let’s rewind to the beginning of the year. My sister was living with family in NY going to community college. Her goal is to become a doctor and this has been her lifelong goal along with being an actress lol. Being the big sister that I am, I always try my best to encourage my sisters to shoot for the stars. Let me stop blabbing and get to the point. Earlier in the year when my family and I decided that my sister was going to make the move from New York to Georgia by me, we began the process of looking for schools for her to apply to. My sister had a list of schools in Georgia she wanted to apply to, Spelman College being one of them. With the encouragement from one of my closest friend, Spelman became the number one college to apply to. Now when you hear about Spelman you immediately think about it being the number 1 Historical Black college in the US. My sister applied and the waiting game to find out if she got in seemed like it took forever.

I’m going to be honest as much as I was encouraging my sister, in the back of my mind I had my doubts and it wasn’t because my sister wasn’t smart enough or didn’t have the GPA -because she more than did. I just thought what are the odds that she will get in to this illustrious institution. Day in and day out she would talk about it, even my friend was like “I can definitely see Chloe going to Spelman, she will fit right in.” My sister literally called as often as she could to see if any mail came to my place about her being accepted into Spelman. Spelman became a topic of discussion ever since she sent in her application, I was lucky to get a “Hi T how are you” lol. The blue envelope my sister would constantly talk about finally came in the mail and all the doubt I had went away.  Out of eight thousand people who applied to Spelman this year, five hundred plus got accepted! and my little sister was one of them(yassssssssss). The screaming and tears of joy were ever present (if you know me you know it doesn’t take much for me to cry). I am beyond proud of my sister and can’t wait for her to become the great doctor I know she will be.

“Worry and faith can’t dwell in the same space” this was a quote that was said to me when I was doubting myself after applying to nursing school. In life, we do doubt certain things and I feel like that’s what makes us human but I for one know that whenever I doubt myself nothing good happens and I limit myself. For instance, I sat on this idea of starting my blog for 2 years all because I was doubting myself and I finally had the courage to believe in myself and here I am. All you have to do is take that extra step, it may seem risky but you’ll see how much you can achieve. Dr Seuss knew what he was saying when he expressed ” Oh the places you’ll go ! “

To my dear sister Chloe, continue to make us proud. I cannot wait to see all the great things you’ll do.

Have you ever doubted yourself? What do you do to stay motivated or inspired? Leave a comment below and let me know.

I definitely doubted myself when I started working on my blog. It took me almost 9 months to release it into the world. Someone said to me “if it fails, what’s the worst thing that could happen”. My answer was to continue working my 9-5 which isn’t the worst thing in the world. So glad I took the leap and pushed fear out of the way. Congrats to Chloe!

A very warm and generous congratulation to both you and Chloe! Hard work, perseverance, and discipline beget those kinds of accomplishments. It’s always nice to see black women grow and thrive. I wish you both the best of luck in all your future endeavours. Cheers!

  10. I enjoyed this. Congrats to your sister. Spelman is golden. I once wanted to attend, but couldn’t afford to. No doubt, she will emerge from there an even greater person.
