I have often been asked the question, “What made you want to become a nurse” and I often would stumble to think of the “right” answer to this question. As I grew, I came to the realization that there is no correct answer to this question; it is a personal question and my answer tends to vary based on the individual asking.

 As a young girl growing up, I had dreams of becoming either a Lawyer, Doctor or Business Woman. After much contemplation, I was able narrow down the list when I first realized I wanted to be in the field of nursing.  As you may know, or will come to know I am a TV lover. There isn’t a TV show that I haven’t seen or isn’t on my watch list. I first took interest in wanting to become a Nurse after watching the show ER where I fell in love with Julianna Margulies’ character, nurse Carol. Nurse Carol stood up for her nurses and was not afraid to tell it like it is. That character showed the importance of a nurse and how compassionate, strong and loving nurses are. Since seeing the show, I developed a strong liking for watching medical TV shows. 

I further solidified my desire in wanting to become a nurse when my first niece was born four months premature and had to spend a few months in the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit). Seeing the way all the nurses were to each baby in the NICU was admirable. They took special care of my niece and never made my family feel out of place. It was then I told myself I wanted to be a Nurse. I am a very compassionate person and I LOVE helping others so I also thought that this would be an excellent career for me.

I still get excited when I learn something new about the human body, I also get extremely excited when I am watching one of my medical TV shows and I can recognize or understand what is going on with a patient (yes I think like a nurse when watching these shows lol).

It is often said that a nurse knows a patient best, more than the physician because a nurse is more involved in a patient’s day to day life. This is one of the reasons why it is my goal to become a nurse.

I am indeed excited for my future as a nurse. There have been some bumps along the way but with life that is expected. I encourage you to keep the faith and keep pushing no matter how rocky the road may seem. This does not only apply solely to anyone in the healthcare field but also to those who are pursuing a career.
