Ever met someone and right away you just hit it off? That’s how it was with this month’s feature. I don’t know what it is but we just clicked and I felt like I knew her for a very long time. As you know, I recently started working at the Children’s hospital, this was my first clinical job that I’ve had where I was going to be working with children; I have all my experience with the geriatrics population. I’ve had to learn a lot being in this new environment. EVERYONE at my job really believes in teamwork. Although, everyone is amazing, there’s this one Nurse that I got attached to and developed a bond in such a short space of time. She’s super smart and is a badass at what she does, an amazing teacher, she has taught me a lot in such short space of time. It’s only right that I show my appreciation to her by making her this month’s feature. Read her story below.
Tell me a little about yourself. What made you choose nursing as a career?
I was a troubled teen; I got pregnant the summer before my senior year in High School. My first period teacher gave me a hard time. So, I dropped out of school my senior year near the end of the first semester. I later saw one of the old counselors from my old high school; she was very encouraging and told me I was too smart and that I needed to be in school. I went back, only this time she was working at a school that gives high school students a second chance. This school was different than the traditional high school they had. This school gave me the opportunity to go at my own pace and allowed me to start taking another class whenever I completed one. Therefore, I was able to complete 6 classes, taking 4 at a given time, in one semester. Also there were other perks for me, including no homework, school was only Monday through Thursday, one hour lunch on or off campus (student’s choice), and other things. Well it was time for my senior project and we had to interview someone in the field we wanted to go into. I wasn’t really thinking that far ahead at the time, I just wanted to be out of school. However, I took the project very seriously, because I figured, who knows I may find something I like. All I knew is that I loved my son so much and I wanted to work with kids. I felt daycare was too many active, snotty nosed kids at once Lol. So I said well I’ll interview a pediatric nurse. So I went to the Children’s Hospital and interviewed a nurse and was in such awe. I knew then that’s what I wanted to do!! And here I am!!!
Where did you start your career, what specialty and where are you working now?
I started my career in Pediatric ICU, and I am still here.
How long have you been a pediatric nurse, why did you choose to go into PEDS?
5years, I knew I wanted to go into PEDS because I love working with kids.
What experience do you have in the nursing field? I have my BSN-RN I work in the Pediatric ICU (5years) I’m CPR certified I’m Pals certified I’m ACLS certified I’m also a transport Nurse I’m studying for my CCRN (Critical Care Registered Nurse) certification I’m training to be a charge nurse I have done Pediatric Home Health
What was your biggest obstacle in nursing/ nursing school?
Balancing a family and my career is the hardest part. I love them both and often times I find it hard to split my time with the two.
What are some suggestions you would give to a new nurse or aspiring nurse?
Stick with it, but only if your heart is there, and only then, will you reap the rewards it has to offer.
Would you stay in this profession or would you like to transition into another field?
